Ways to Volunteer

When you package meals, you’re helping thousands of hungry people throughout the world. Meals are transported directly to locations where people are undernourished or starving. Not only are you helping people in need, but meal packaging is also a fun, easy way to volunteer. So, whether you’re an individual, or represent a business, school, church, community organization or interested group of volunteers, there are many ways you can volunteer with Meals from the Heartland.

Open Packaging: Come to an open packaging event at our West Des Moines packaging center. Each packaging shift is two hours.  These are open to the public on a first come, first served basis and are scheduled Tuesday through Saturday. You may sign up individually or with others.  We will put you into groups of 7-10 people per table and your table will package approximately 2,000 meals per hour! Even a short amount of time can make a huge difference. We also need Pack Masters, Bucket Brigade, and Event Greeters. Click here to learn more about volunteer roles or here to sign up.

Your Donations Matter: Did you know that each awesome volunteer uses $100 worth of ingredients and materials and makes approximately 400 meals during their 2-hour shift? (Ingredients are NOT donated by our suppliers.) You can defer these costs by making a donation.  Thank you!

Please note: for student/youth groups we require the following student to adult ratio for each packaging table.
