13th Annual Des Moines Hunger Fight
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are MILLIONS OF MEALS BEHIND in feeding starving children; they are waiting for our meals! We look forward to showing you a new packaging procedure that will allow us to package A NEW GOAL OF 6 MILLION MEALS as we try to catch up. Please read below about the different ways you may volunteer and the countries that will receive these meals.
Be a Packager
We need volunteers to package 6 MILLION MEALS to feed the most vulnerable during this 3-week event.
We will be adhering to the health and safety procedures to minimize risk to all volunteers and staff including:
- Reducing the number of packagers per table, and limiting total capacity to 50%.
- Volunteers must be 14 years or older or at least 8 years old and accompanied by an adult family member. Family units are welcome; however, we recommend a 2 child per adult policy at this time (i.e. 4 children per 2 adults).
- Clean masks (a bandana or scarf is not acceptable) will be required to be worn during your shift. Gloves will be provided.
Invite your friends, family, and coworkers, and package lifesaving meals for those who desperately need them. Together, we’ll change the world from right here at our Patty Cownie Packaging Center at Meals from the Heartland, 357 Lincoln St., West Des Moines, IA.
Individuals, small groups, businesses, organizations, civic groups, church and school groups, and more are all welcome. Please note, if you’re bringing a student group, for safety reasons, you are required to meet the following grade and student-to-adult ratio requirements as we don’t have enough staff to supervise the students:
|Grades 4-8||2 students to 1 adult|
|Grades 9-12||9 students to 1 adult|
Be a Support Volunteer
Pack Masters are the only support volunteers needed for this event due to changes required by COVID-19. Prior packaging experience is recommended.
What is a Pack Master? A Pack Master trains, organizes and supervises packagers at packaging stations. They will help with set-up and clean-up as needed during a typical 3-hour shift. Prior training with MftH staff is required.
