What an amazing testament to the message of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.!
Meals from the Heartland held three separate packaging events on Monday, January 18, to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day here in Des Moines and we were blown away by the astounding turnout and results!
One of our teams headed out to Grand View University for the annual MLK Day of Service Community Partnership Project. This year, Grand View received a grant from Iowa Campus Compact to help support the Meals from the Heartland packaging event and to purchase the supplies needed. Last year, students and faculty packaged 20,000 meals. This year they vastly surpassed that total by completing nearly 39,000 meals during this one-day event! Great job, Vikings!
Meals from the Heartland was privileged to again partner with the John R. Grubb YMCA to provide a service project as part of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Prayer Breakfast. Held in the Drake University Knapp Center, community residents and local leaders came together in fellowship through a breakfast meal followed by a keynote address from author, advocate and philanthropist Tavis Smiley. There was a ceremony to recognize community leaders, a youth choir performance, and a Youth Summit for about 250 high school students from all across the Des Moines metro. In the spirit of “whistle while you work”, members of the Roosevelt High School Choir sang loud and proud during the packaging event, creating a fun and energetic atmosphere for everyone involved. This fantastic group packaged over 40,000 meals in only a couple of hours!
While these events were taking place around Des Moines, the Meals from the Heartland packaging center in West Des Moines was buzzing with its own frenetic activity! We put out a call for volunteers for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 6 and you answered the call, filling all eight sessions available in ONE DAY! We were overwhelmed by your generous support! Throughout our MLK Day of Service event, we passed our goal of 145,000 meals with flying colors, packaging over 154,000 at the West Des Moines location alone! All together, volunteers packaged almost 234,000 meals to be distributed here in Iowa and all over the globe!
