, an article published in National Geographic in 2014, is still a relevant picture of hunger in rural, suburban and urban America.

“It’s a cruel irony that people in rural Iowa can be malnourished amid forests of cornstalks running to the horizon.”
                – Tracey McMillian, The New Face of Hunger

The article is a fascinating account of four American families who struggle to eat daily. Perhaps the most shocking revelation drawn from their stories is that in America, obesity and malnourishment are directly correlated. This is due to cheap, processed foods that are easily available in grocery stores and food pantries. While in urban America, food deserts (areas without grocery stores nearby) are peppered with accessible, cheap, unhealthy fast food.

Hunger in America 2

Amy Toensing/National Geographic/The New Face of Hunger

At Meals from the Heartland, we want to eliminate the faces of hunger in America. In a country where many of us have more than enough, shouldn’t we answer God’s call to help those who don’t have enough?

Our meals are packed with vitamins and nutrition. If we can get enough of them to food pantries here in Iowa and throughout the country, we can ensure that these families have one less worry.

Help us save lives in America by fundraising on Fund the Food.

1.) Create a fundraising page

2.) Share it via email and social media

3.) Earn donations that produce lifesaving meals.

Fundraising Goal

First, when you register to be a fundraiser on Fund the Food, you’ll be asked to set a fundraising goal. Although you may not know an ideal goal amount right off the bat, it’s important to set one so that your prospective donors are motivated to help you reach it. $200-$500 is a good starting goal.

My Headquarters

When your goal is set, you’ll arrive at your headquarters. The 6 tabs on the dashboard are My HQ (headquarters), My Webpage, Email, Reports, Tools and Community.

My Webpage

Screen Shot 2016-05-18 at 10.07.58 AM
First, click My Webpage>Edit Personal Page to edit your fundraising page. It’s important to personalize your page as much as you can so your donors (likely your friends, family, coworkers, peers, etc.) know they’re helping YOU and Meals from the Heartland . Make your page stand out from others by editing or adding to the copy in the text box at the bottom of your personal page. Let donors know how important this mission is to you. For example, include a personal story, what Meals from the Heartland’s mission means to you, how you first discovered MftH, or include a special time you had packaging.

You are also encouraged to upload a new photo to your page. Some fun ideas: Make a sign and have someone take a photo of you or your team holding it, have someone take a photo of you packaging meals, or find a photo that represents your support for saving the starving. Just make it fun! Donors love to support meaningful, optimistic causes that are represented by fun, real people! The ability to be yourself on Fund the Food is what makes this online fundraising community so special. It’s truly a community.

Edit Personal Page also has an area for you to preview your fundraising page, but this is not what the finished page will actually look like. To see exactly what your page will look like, you must submit your edits and then click View Personal Page. This is how it will appear to donors when you send them the link to your page.

Email

Screen Shot 2016-05-18 at 10.13.40 AM
Use the Send Email feature to send emails out to prospective donors. Use (and customize!) 5 email templates for either individuals or teams. Find these in the Templates dropdown box. Some of these emails require you to add in information, so read them carefully before sending out.

Screen Shot 2016-05-18 at 10.09.32 AM

Plan communication with donors carefully. Some people need more motivation to donate than others. Send out an initial email to everyone you think would be interested in this cause. Remember to include family, friends and any networks that value philanthropy (for example; church groups, community organizations and associations, fraternities, friends looking for silver cord hours, etc.) Ask these groups to reach out to their contacts to reach an even broader audience.

Easily import existing addresses from your current email with the Address Book Import tab.

Fund the Food for the Annual Hunger Fight

It’s time to rethink how we fund the meal packages that feed millions here in Iowa and throughout the world. Say “sayonara” to boring fundraising, awkwardly asking for money, or struggling to cover the costs of your hunger fight.

Now, fundraising for Meals from the Heartland is fun, exciting and rewarding for everyone! Introducing: Fund the Food. It’s an online community that allows individuals and teams to customize their own fundraising pages and engage friends, family and peers.

We want all of our Hunger Fighters to use Fund the Food to do just that before they package at the Annual Hunger Fight this year! Let’s see if we can reach our goal of $150,000 to package 5 MILLION MEALS! We are confident that we can. You won’t be able to register for the Annual Hunger Fight until August 1st, but you can start fundraising for the event NOW!

How to Fundraise for the Hunger Fight:

Create a team, join a team or fundraise individually to fund the meals you and thousands of others will package at the Annual Hunger Fight. In Fund the Food, click “Start Fundraising” to set a fundraising goal and then reach out to donors to meet your goal before the Hunger Fight. Celebrate your fundraising efforts and package some of your hard-earned meals at the big event at Hy-Vee Hall. Groups and individuals who raise the most money will be recognized at the event.

Ready to get started? Go to Fund the Food, and log in with your email or social media login.

Read our post, “Tips for Funding the Food” for information on customizing your page, attracting donors and making the most of your fundraising efforts.

How is Fund the Food different from Friends Asking Friends?

Our new fundraising community is still located on a Friends asking Friends platform, so if you’ve used Friends Asking Friends in the past, your login information will still be the same on Fund the Food. An updated design and easier navigation makes fundraising and donating on Fund the Food much more enjoyable. It’s easy to fundraise as an individual or to create your own team. Donors can sponsor an individual’s hunger fight, or make a general donation to the Annual Hunger Fight. The best way to learn about Fund the Food is to check it out yourself!

At Meals from the Heartland, it is our mission to empower people to believe that they can make a difference. Due to the belief that they can save the starving, thousands of volunteers have packaged over 65 million meals through Meals from the Heartland since 2008.

A Brand New Way to Help Us Change Lives

In fact, it is so easy to make a difference in the life of a suffering child in Africa, and for a struggling family here in Iowa.

Each of our meals costs just 20 cents to package. Our amazing volunteers package these meals weekly at our West Des Moines Packaging Center. Then, our distribution partners take thousands of meals from our warehouse and distribute them directly to orphanages, schools and locations where people are in need. If our Meals from the Heartland community continues to believe that we can make a difference, there’s no limit to the amount of lives we can change.

And now, there’s a brand new way to help us change lives. Next week, we’re launching our online fundraising community called Fund the Food. With this platform, anyone can create a fundraising page and start collecting donations online for Meals from the Heartland.

If a donor contributes just $5, they’re ensuring 25 people will get a meal. You can help us reach our fundraising goal on Fund the Food until the Annual Hunger Fight begins on August 31st. Then, you can help package all the meals you funded!

Sign up for Fund the Food starting Monday, June 20th. We can’t wait to save lives with you.

The journey of saving the starving.

When you donate to Meals from the Heartland today, you’re helping us fund ingredients and materials that allow volunteers to package lifesaving meals. You are taking part in the very first step of our mission to empower people to save the starving. The second step, obviously, is meal packaging. But once meal boxes are taped and stacked on pallets, secured and shrink-wrapped, where do they go?

Some of them stay in our own backyard. If you’re packaging mac and cheese meals, you can be sure you’re preparing a meal for someone here in Iowa. Last year, one million meals fed hungry people here in the state. They were distributed through various food banks and pantries, including: DMARC, Food Bank of Iowa, Boys and Girls Club, Zion Lutheran, Grimes UMC, The Cupboard Ankeny and the Eddie Davis Center.

Some of our rice and soy meals feed people in Iowa as well, as part of a Combo Meal with DMARC food bank items. To read an in-depth report about Combo Meals and our local impact, read Fighting Hunger Here in Iowa.

The rest of the meals are shipped to international locations through our dedicated partner, Convoy of Hope. Last year, 15 million meals that were packaged right here in West Des Moines fed millions of people throughout the world. Specifically, (in order of quantity of meals shipped, greatest to least): Nicaragua, Haiti, Cambodia, Uganda, South Africa, Ukraine, Philippines, El Salvador, Kenya, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Gallup, New Mexico in the United States.

So, when you’re donating online today, or pouring ingredients into a meal bag, know that your contribution is making our mission possible. Because of you, a meal will reach someone who needs it. Whether in a deteriorating village in Haiti or a food pantry in downtown Des Moines, you ARE making a difference.
