Meals from the Heartland is a non-profit, 501(c) 3 organization composed of volunteers who package meals for delivery to starving people around the world as well as right here in Central Iowa and elsewhere in the United States. Individuals, businesses, schools, churches and various civic organizations have come together to show the nation and the world what people who truly care can accomplish.
Empowering people to save the starving.
The Meals from the Heartland Vision is to alleviate life-threatening hunger through:
Educating – Offering information and resources about the issue of hunger and every person’s role in it.
Engaging – Providing year-round resources and heart-changing service opportunities for people of all ages to serve God and their neighbors near and far.
Feeding – Working with various partners to provide meal distribution to people in need around the world.
Since 2008, Meals from the Heartland has provided more than 22 million meals to the hungry in Iowa and around the world.
- 2008 – 4,028,136
- 2009 – 4,029,934
- 2010 – 8,084,698**
- 2011 – 6,083,811
- 2012 – 7,782,156
**The 2010 meal packaging total includes more than 2 million meals produced for disaster relief efforts in response to the January 2010 Haiti earthquake.
The inspiration for the Meals from the Heartland effort began with a 2007 food packaging event held during Lent by a church in West Des Moines, Iowa. The success of that event encouraged leaders to organize a community-wide food packaging event that would involve more volunteers to feed hungry children and families. It was that leap of faith that brought Meals from the Heartland to Des Moines in 2008, resulting in 12,000 volunteers who packaged more than 4 million meals in a week’s time at our first Annual Hunger Fight.
The success of that first event led to the development of a year-round meal packaging effort. Thousands of volunteers now come together each year during our fall Annual Hunger Fight, and also during Mobile Hunger Fights held throughout the year.
